2017 has been a massive year for Sony, and some of the best PS4 games released have really captured the imagination. It has been a calendar year in which the Japanese corporation has underlined its domination of the console marketplace, and it is therefore interesting to look back at the very best PS4 games released over the last 12 months.
Persona 5 is undoubtedly one of the best PS4 games of the calendar year, pushing the RPG genre forward with a combination of unique art, music and gameplay. With scenes based in contemporary Tokyo and bizarre yet beautiful alternate realities, Persona 5 captured the imagination of gamers all over the world, and truly crossed into the mainstream.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
A fascinating title that explores the thorny yet important issue of mental health, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice illustrates just what can be done with a contemporary video game. Literally enabling gamers to understand a rare and often misunderstood mental illness, it could be argued that Hellblade even provides a public service.
The gameplay here can be provocative, but that is really the whole point of this engaging and innovative title.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
More conventional was the latest Resident Evil game, and this is one that Capcom can be particularly proud of. Survival-horror is old news by now, of course, and the Resident Evil series has been around for several years. But this game did a great job of delivering the thrills and spills associated with Resident Evil, meaning that it is definitely a standout selection for 2017. Definitely one of the best PS4 games of 2017.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
The best PS4 games certainly wouldn’t be complete without this notorious Nazi shooter. Wolfenstein has established itself as a fixture in the gaming landscape, and one that is becoming as popular as the most successful games in the genre. There is intelligence here as well as mind-blowing violence, though, with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus providing something of an insight into the ruthless subjugation of the Nazis.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Undoubtedly a standout game of this or any other year, Horizon Zero Dawn presents a twist on the usual post-apocalyptic scenario. Technology and nature have evolved together in this game world, resulting in one of the most enjoyable titles this year.
With a particularly memorable central character in the shape of Aloy, Horizon Zero Dawn will undoubtedly go down as one of the best PS4 games of 2017, not least due to its beautiful and intricate game world.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Naughty Dog is readying The Last of Us 2 for release, but in the meantime this spin-off of the hugely popular Uncharted series was certainly welcome. Nathan Drake was replaced by two female protagonists, which received a strong critical reception. Not quite as meaty as a full-blown Uncharted title, but certainly sets the series up for a rich narrative direction in the future.
