After the launch of Switch, Nintendo is completely looking to focus on its hybrid console and new titles coming this year. The hybrid console has been on the market for less than a year and has not only blown past the sales of Wii in that time, itself an enormous success, but cemented itself as the fastest selling console of all-time in the United States.
According to Nintendo, the Switch sold more than 4.8 million units in the U.S. since the system’s launch ten months ago, breaking the record previously held by the Wii which sold 4 million units in its first ten months. Nintendo Switch was the biggest leap by Nintendo which not only transformed the outlook of a portable gaming console but merged the feature of co-op play as well as a widescreen support into a small cute little box.
“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go”, said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO.
The Switch has been bolstered by an incredibly strong lineup of first party games. Nintendo revealed that 60% of Switch owners purchased Super Mario Odyssey, while 55% own Breath of the Wild. It also would be nice to hear about a new Mario Kart, Mario Party, Animal Crossing, and F-Zero as well.
There are now over 300 third-party titles available for the Switch ranging from compelling indies to jaw-dropping AAAs. For comparison, the Nintendo 3DS sold no more than 4 million units during the same timeframe in its launch year in the US. This is the highest amount of sales for any home console in the United States, claiming the title from its previous owner – also a Nintendo console – the Wii.
